Why sometimes you just have to say “So What?” in business

I remember years ago being told a story of a little boy who had a speech impediment and the other children were constantly teasing him. He ran home to tell his parents who told him that the next time anyone says anything negative about something he cannot control then he must say “So what?”

The next time a child teased him, he responded “So what?” and yes, you guessed it! They were speechless and had nothing left to say!

Why sometimes you just have to say “So What?” in business…..

There are times in business when stuff happens. You cannot give up, you cannot fall apart, so why don’t you just say: “So What?”. The strategy you spent hours on did not work “So What?” , the business risk you took did not pay off “So What?”, your money was wasted on a useless product “So What?”, the client did not come through “So What?”or you made an error of judgement with your company”So What?”. The list of “So What’s?” is endless……….

What’s done is done! Nothing you can do about that, but….you have a couple of options here.

  • To give up and say “I can’t do this any more!” Or………..

  • To get up once again and say “So What?”

Words are very powerful when said aloud but I think they can be even more powerful when they are going around in your head! As business owners many of us face the battle of words in our minds such as: “why don’t you just go out and get a job like everyone else” or “this is never ever going to work, you are wasting your time!”

The good news there are countless true stories of people who never gave up and reached the reward for not doing so. Here are just a few:

Sidney Poitier- Told to find work aka dishwasher!

Stephen Spielberg- Rejected from film school 3 times!

Tyler Perry (aka Madea) – Suicidal and Homeless!

Oprah Winfrey- Told she was unfit for TV and got fired!

Walt Disney-Told he “lacked imagination” because he created Mickey Mouse!

Sometimes in both life and business when stuff happens, as it does! You just have to shrug your shoulders and say “So What?” to yourself, your friends and even your enemies! distractions

Why? Because….

“Life’s too short!”
