Are you showing off your gifts and talents in your business plan?



Did you know that the business plan can be a great place to show your gifts and talents? It is a place where you can really blow your own trumpet!!! You cannot really be shy when it comes to business.

For some of you, the problem may be that you have more than one gift. In fact you have so many, it’s hard to know which ones to focus on let alone put them in a business plan!

Let’s look at the definition of the word “gift” mean?

The dictionary defines this as “a natural ability or talent”

Not appreciating the word “gift” then let’s look at the word “talent”

Which means “natural aptitude or skill”

However you want to interpret it still goes back to using skills which other people may find difficult, but you find it easy!

How do you start evaluating, for yourself, what you a good at? Here are some helpful tips:

Step 1. Take a few moments and reflect on what you were good at during your education years? What did your teachers always say about you? For example, even if they said you talk too much that is still a skill which many people have to pay others to learn! Think about it…..

Step 2. What is the area within your life where you find achieving easy? You know! The accomplishments or talent that everyone raves about and you lower your eyelids and say ever so meekly “Oh that…it was nothing, really!” (feel free to add your own dramatic flair to it)

Step 3. Take your gift for spin! When did you last use your gift? Make up your mind to dust it off this week! Be it singing, baking, designing, writing, drawing, building, public speaking or even blogging? Just give it a go to see if you’ve still got it, you may be very pleasantly surprised. Even if you are out of practice!

Step 4. Keep practising and developing until you are very good or even outstanding at what you do. Don’t go into it half-hearted, at the same time, don’t let others throw cold water on it either!

Step 5. Keep an eye on those who encourage you and test it out on people who don’t know you and can give you honest feedback. They may tell you it’s good but not great. That is helpful because it means you need to fine tune your talent.

Of course there are always more steps, but you can do the rest of the work on this one!

Finally put yourself in your business plan, don’t hold back! If you  don’t try, how will you know if you will succeed? Why? Because….

Does your business plan reflect your vision?

Business plan and vision

Does your business plan reflect your vision? You may think this is a strange question, however we don’t always consider this as a factor when discussing or planning our vision. Think about it, people usually want to meet the individual behind the vision when they are impressed with what you are doing, but where lending money or investing is concerned, it is normally about the vision behind the person! This is where a good business plan with a great mission statement is very useful.

Your business plan should consist of relevant information and be a “working document” which includes, your vision for growth and moving forward in a progressive, methodical way. It can even include when you plan to exit your own business!

Not sure what your vision is yet? Here are a few questions you could ask yourself:


  1. What tasks or services are you naturally good at? Oftentimes you find you have not been trained to do it. It just flows out of you!
  2. Does it make you happy when you do it? Just because you can, does not always mean you should!
  3. If you could make a living out of it, would you? We don’t always know how to turn our gifts into revenue but your business plan can show you if this is possible!

Did you know that many successful businesses have their starting point in working with a natural flair or talent, which may not have been recognised initially?


It takes courage to take a step towards your ideal role, of doing what you love and loving what you do, to generating income. Your business plan may show up some gaps which you can quickly remedy. These steps may include:

  1. Taking up a course of study to finely tune your skills or get certified for them
  2. Creating or joining a network of like-minded people who can support you and vice-versa
  3. Devoting some time and energy to creating a picture of what you would really like to do and how you would like to do it.
  4. Be prepared to invest in yourself to make progress, regardless of supports you.

Remember the old adage:-Nothing ventured, nothing gained? I conclude by adding, no point living in regret of what you didn’t do. Why? Because…

Writing down a business plan

Your business plan is a summary of your written goals. Why is this important? It represents a real commitment!

Are you committed to your business? I mean really committed?

What is this word “Commitment” and what does it mean?

Dictionary definition: “The state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc”

Commitment the very thing that separates your dreams from your goals!

Keep a copy of your business plan in sight and refer to it often.

Let’s talk  about  3 groups made up of 3%, 30% and 67% this may help you….

Did you know that Harvard Business School researchers studied what made the difference in success or failure for people of similar backgrounds and educational standards? What did they find?

  • 3% were highly successful – what did they have in common? They wrote down their specific goals.
  • 30% were moderately successful had a general idea of where they were going -but didn’t have any goals formalized.
  • The remaining 67% were happy to watch the world go by!

Please note that those in the 30% category only needed to put in a small amount of effort to graduate into the next group.

What is the secret? Having routines and strategies which support the achievement of their clear goals.

One of the easy ways to find out if you are running a business or a hobby is not to ask everyone what they think, instead take a look at your business plan.

You can then ask yourself a few simple questions.  Such as:

      Am I delivering my product/service for commercial reasons?

      Do I have clear charging structure for my product/services ?

      Am I regularly undertaking or making products and/or delivering services?

      Is my service/product planned, organised, distributed and carried on in a business-like manner?

      Is there is a natural (organic) demand for my product/services?

If you answer yes to more than two of these questions, it would be reasonable to assume that you are operating a business.

The next important question is:

Are you being paid for what you do or are you giving your time effort and energy just because you love what you do? Even if you charge, you need to calculate how much time is spent on a project or product so you don’t end up working for £1.00 and hour or less!

Things to consider: As an example; if someone commissions you to design a logo for them and they continually want to discuss it, change it, modify it etc. If you have spent a total of 25 hours talking to them, without factoring in the price of consultancy, you may well find yourself out of pocket!

Your business plan will help to keep you focused on your true objectives. Seeing your vision in black and white has a great impact on your approach to doing business.

If you have a well designed business plan, you can use it to keep your business on track. If you do not have one it may help you to put one in place. Why? Because….

3 reasons to have a good business plan in 2015

You have a good business idea but no business plan?? You need  a plan and not just any plan, but a good business plan!

There are many reasons why you should have a good business plan.  There are lots of debates around whether it is worthwhile having a business plan. Some may disagree but personally, I struggle to see your vision when it isn’t documented anywhere! I will give you some food for thought and you can decide for yourself whether you think it is necessary or not. So here we go…..

3 reasons you need a good business plan:

  1. It demonstrates that you are serious about your business– there is no point saying “it’s all in my head!” When I hear people saying this, a voice in my head says either:-

(a) This person is very lazy,

(b) They are not serious


(c) They don’t know how to do one

You go ahead and choose the appropriate answer. If you don’t know how to do one then ask for help. If you’re not really serious about business best get off the bus now!


  1. It demonstrates that you can think strategically about your business-when you are able to explain what you are doing, where you are going and how you plan to achieve it, you are likely to attract interest to your business and who knows where that could lead to! Just suppose a crowd-funder came to see you and said “I have £30k I am looking to invest in a start-up or up and coming company, I heard your name mentioned and would like to see your plans” What would you do? Hopefully pull out your well-presented, business plan, show him (or her), get the money and run!


  1. It demonstrates that you understand that circumstances, income, outgoings and people are subject to change and that you are prepared to deal with the unexpected! In other words you are mature enough to recognise that everything is subject to change and you need your business plan to be flexible enough to keep going or recover!

I therefore invite you to make it a goal to create a good business plan in 2015. Why? Because…
