So you got the big contract! The money is secured and rolling in. You are celebrating, excited and cannot wait to get started. What happens next? I’ll you tell what happens next…you start looking for the next contract! Please don’t wait until the job is nearly completed. Try and do your best to bring in some more work before it expires. You need to keep pushing when things are good!

Why do you need to do this?

Here a 7 reasons to consider:

  1. However much you are receiving now, won’t last forever!
  2. Unexpected costs may eat into your budget!
  3. You need to create a pipeline of business to keep the flow going!
  4. Keeps you on the cutting edge of the latest information for you industry!
  5. Use your existing contract to promote your next one!
  6. You need to keep “sowing seeds” of marketing to harvest contracts regularly!
  7. You need to be talking with, engaging with, touching base with, and growing your current relationships.

 

      Taking these actions will help to cut down on your anxiety levels about

Why sometimes you have to lose to grow in business!

 

I know it does not sound right at first! When you are a budding entrepreneur it  seems like the most important thing to do is “stack ‘em high and sell ‘em cheap!” in others words get as much money into your business in as many ways possible. However there is a reason why sometimes you have to lose to grow in business!

 

Losing to gain

When I talk about “losing” in the context of business I am talking about what behaviours and mindsets you are likely to need to drop off in order to develop as an entrepreneur or head of an empire! The list below is not exhaustive but may give you some issues to ponder on that may be impacting how you do business:

 

  1. Being afraid – You won’t know how something will work until you try it!
  2. Poor work habits – Ensure that you develop your systems and formulas (or procedures and policies) regarding how you get your work done.
  3. Ignoring what’s not working– Remember that it’s never too late to cut your losses and change the way you’re doing things. Be smart! If something isn’t working, change it!
  4. Failing to be proactive –It is a grave mistake to think that you can succeed in business without asking for it! You need to keep on letting everyone know what you do.
  5. Being complacent (or lazy!)- Getting a nice contract or having had a good week is no reason to sit back and relax! Business is like being on a roller coaster: you can have a great week followed by three not so great weeks. You need to build up a pipeline of work.
  6. Lack of endurance – Persistence pays off with huge dividends! Decide how you plan to overcome each and every obstacle getting in the way of your success.
  7. Forgetting– Having your own business is good old fashioned hard work! Don’t forget this!

There may be other behaviours and mindset you need to lose to grow-up in business. Take some time out to identify them in the end you will grow! Why? Because…

To all budding entrepreneurs! Beware of the dream stealers!

We have all met dream stealers at some time in our lives! Whether they are friends, colleagues or family (not you of course!) they all have similar traits they like to steal (or crush) other people’s dreams. They may not want to do anything with it they cannot see why you should have any! Recall the child (which could have been you!) who wanted to take everyone’s toys for themselves just because they could? The common mistake is that these people are jealous, they are not! Some people struggle with seeing people rise up, end of!

(Yes it’s very childish, I know, but there we are!)

When you are trying to get your business off the ground be aware there will be those dream stealers (crushers) who come out with questions/statements such as:

1. “Really? Do you have experience in this area?” in other words “I don’t see you doing this successfully”
2. “Is this a good time?” in other words “I don’t see you doing this successfully”
3. “I know several people who tried that” in other words “I don’t see you doing this successfully”
4. “Do you think people will buy?” in other words “I don’t see you doing this successfully”
5. “What will you do if it doesn’t take off?” in other words “I don’t see you doing this successfully”
6. “Good luck with that!” in other words “I don’t see you doing this successfully”
7. “Is there any money to be made it that?” in other words “I don’t see you doing this successfully”

Are you getting my drift? The questions in themselves are not wrong but the intention and motivation behind the question is! Coming from a dream stealer it’s trying to put doubts in your mind! If they really knew you they would realised that you have put together all your facts and figures and are stepping out into your well-planned dream.

How do you manage them? When you feel their negative tentacles reaching out to you run like the wind (either naturally or metaphorically!) You will get a peaceful night’s sleep too!

The dangers of spreading yourself too thinly in business!

When you are running a small business it can sometimes be challenging to keep your priorities straight. You certainly don’t want to be turning work down in the early stages, if this can be avoided but at what point should you recognise your limitations? When to say no or pass it on (for a connectors fee) to someone you trust to deliver good quality work and service in business can be hard to work out!

As the work starts to come in (as it will!) how do you know what should come first, how to adjust the order and what to put on the back burner?

When a substantial contract or piece of work if offered to you, here are some questions to ask yourself:

  1. Do I have the resources and the budget to complete the work?
  2. Is it urgent? Or can I put it I my diary for a date in the near future?
  3. Will it “add value” to the direction and development of your company goals?-is it in my general remit of delivery or do I want it to be?
  4. Will this contract have a huge positive impact on my business (kudos)
  5. If I do not have the resources and/or budget can I outsource it to a similar company I am connected or aligned with
  6. If I do this, will I still keep the “quality” I would have maintained as if I had done it myself?
  7. Is it a very important contract? Should you cancel or redirect other work to make this happen?

If you are clever you can make this a “win-win” situation for your business and your self-esteem! distractions

 

Remember: there is a difference between “urgent” and “important”! You will need to work out which is which and what new contracts are worth moving tasks around for. Why? Because…

We all need to be reminded sometimes of the customer service! I have never met anyone who enjoyed a bad customer service experience! Have you? Did you know that people very rarely complain to the owners direct? What they do instead?  

 

 

 

1)    They do not come back!

2)    They tell other people!

 3)    Those who they tell, won’t there go either!

One of the critical issues with running a business is that of maintaining a good reputation. This can be challenging if you are not the delivery person but have other people are representing you. Pause for a moment and think of all the negative experiences you have had when parting with your money and the resentment you feel. Just because you had nowhere else to go!

 

The question it would be helpful ask is: How can I maintain good customer service so that my business is not impacted in a negative way?
